1. Lorenzo Carrier, OF, Appoquinimink HS, West Middletown, Del.

A big, physical two-way athlete, Carrier is the top-ranked prep prospect out of Delaware and has real upside on both sides of the ball at the next level, though pro scouts undoubtedly are more intrigued with him as a position player. If he makes it to campus at Miami, he would have a chance to play both ways, but there’s been a significant amount of heat on him this spring during his high school season. Listed at 6-foot-4, 200 pounds, Carrier has some strength now but plenty of physical projection on his frame and scouts think he’s going to grow into a corner outfield profile—with the power to match. Carrier has bat speed and should have a chance to get to above-average power in the future as he learns to utilize his lower half more efficiently in his swing. Scouts have said he barely gets his legs involved currently. He has plus arm strength from the outfield and has been in the 88-92 mph range with his fastball on the mound, with some ability to spin a breaking ball as well. A team that drafts Carrier in a signable range will have a lot of comfort with their area scout’s history, since Carrier dealt with hamstring and biceps injuries last summer and wasn’t at full strength. On top of his two-way talent, Carrier is also a talented high school basketball player. There’s risk here as he has some rawness in all aspects, but significant upside as well for a team excited about his potential when he focuses on one sport and one position. On July 4, Carrier announced that he was withdrawing from the draft and honoring his commitment to Miami.
