The conversation starts in the only logical place it could have, with a discussion of the series sweep for No. 1 Arkansas over then-No. 2 Mississippi State in Starkville. The Razorbacks’ offense showed up early and often against a very talented Bulldogs pitching staff, its own pitching staff held MSU at bay and they truly dominated from start to finish. For Arkansas, this was an announcement that it is the best team going in college baseball. There likely isn’t a reason for panic about Mississippi State’s performance, but it will certainly look to play better moving forward in SEC play.
The hosts also discuss the Pac-12, which continues to be incredibly interesting after a weekend where Arizona won a series with Oregon and UCLA looked in good form with a series win over rival Southern California. Oregon State and Arizona State also continued to play well, so don’t look now, but there could be as many as eight teams in the conference with very real postseason aspirations.
Meanwhile, the ACC continues to beat up on itself, with NC State on the brink of finishing off a series win over North Carolina on Monday, Virginia Tech sweeping Pittsburgh on the road and Wake Forest taking a series from Florida State in Tallahassee. In a season where this is going to be the expectation in this conference, just keeping your head above water as a team might be good enough to be in a position to make the field of 64.
Finally, they talk about the series win for Louisiana Tech over Southern Mississippi on the road, which gives La Tech a leg up in the Conference USA race early on. With the likes of Florida Atlantic, Old Dominion, Charlotte and Texas-San Antonio also playing well over the weekend, it is looking increasingly like it’s going to be an extremely successful season in the conference after several years of the league decreasing in prominence.
