Phillies Bolster Bullpen, Add Phelps From Milwaukee

After acquiring Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree from the Red Sox and David Hale from the Yankees, the Phillies made another move just ahead of Monday’s trade deadline by dealing three players to be named later to the Brewers in exchange for righthander David Phelps, who has had an excellent season in Milwaukee.
PHILLIES ACQUIRE :
David Phelps, RHP
Age: 33
For the second straight season, Phelps finds himself changing addresses at the trade deadline. Last year, he was sent from the Blue Jays to the Cubs. This year, he moved from Milwaukee to Philly. Phelps has done an excellent job neutralizing lefthanders this year, having held them to just four hits in 32 at-bats. Moreover, he’s limited hard contact all year long. His average exit velocity allowed of 80.4 miles per hour is the lowest figure among qualified pitchers, and his strikeout percentage is in the 98th percentile.
BREWERS ACQUIRE :
Brandon Ramey, RHP
Age: 20
Ramey was the Phillies’ 30th-round pick in 2018 out of high school in Riverside, Calif. He’s a slim righthander with a four-pitch mix and a fastball that tops at 93 mph. He’s a strike-thrower who uses a slider as his putaway pitch. In 11 games (seven starts) over two seasons in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League, Ramey has struck out 37 in 31.2 innings.
Juan Geraldo, RHP
Age: 19
Signed out of the Dominican in 2017, Geraldo is intriguing for his athleticism and ease of operation. He throws strikes with a mid-90s fastball and his slider flashes as his best offspeed pitch. In two seasons in the Dominican Summer League and the GCL, Geraldo has gone 5-4 with 85 strikeouts in 86 innings.
Israel Puello, RHP
Age: 19
Puello is a touch-and-feel starter who pitches mostly off of a high-80s fastball that evaluators say plays well above its reading on the radar gun. He’s struck out 143 against 56 walks over two seasons in the Dominican Summer League. Repeating the level in 2019, Puello whiffed 83 and struck out 19 in 65.2 innings.
