Los Angeles Dodgers
—No. 3 prospect Brusdar Graterol made his 12th appearance in the team’s shutout win over the Giants in the second game of a doubleheader, averaging 99 mph on his sinker and allowing a hit in a scoreless inning. The 22-year-old righthander is 0-2, 3.09 with seven strikeouts and one walk in 11.2 innings.
Pittsburgh Pirates
—Cody Ponce pitched 5.2 innings of shutout ball to earn his first career win against the Cardinals. The 26-year-old righthander allowed five hits and two walks and struck out two, relying on his four-seamer that averaged 93.1 mph and mixing in his upper-80s cutter, low-90s sinker, curveball and changeup.
San Diego Padres
—Jake Cronenworth collected four hits in the team’s doubleheader against the Mariners. The utilityman, who started at second base in both contests, went 2-for-4 with a run scored in the first game and added two more hits in the second game to raise his average to .360. Cronenworth is currently riding an 11-game hit streak and has reached base in 24 of 27 games.
—Jorge Mateo hit a ground-rule double in a pinch-hit at-bat that exited his bat at 99.8 mph for his first career hit in the team’s loss to the Mariners in the second game of a doubleheader. The shortstop, whom the Padres acquired for a player to be named later from the Athletics on July 22, is 1-for-8 since returning from the injured list on Aug. 13.
San Francisco Giants
—No. 12 prospect Logan Webb was charged with his third loss, allowing five runs in 3.2 innings, giving up four hits and two walks and striking out four. The 23-year-old righthander has pitched to a 2-3, 4.35 mark in seven starts with 30 strikeouts and 13 walks in 31 innings.
Seattle Mariners
—Jose Marmolejos crushed a home run in both games of a doubleheader against the Padres, hitting a two-run shot in the first game and a grand slam in the second. The first baseman finished the day with three hits and six RBIs. Marmolejos’ first homer exited the bat at 103.8 mph and his second was hit 107.1 mph, marking the hardest hit ball of his big league career until he crushed a double at 108.8 mph later in the game. The first baseman has hit three home runs and driven in nine in 36 at-bats.
—Ljay Newsome pitched four one-run innings in his first big league start, allowing three hits and striking out four. The 23-year-old righthander averaged 91.6 mph on his fastball and mixed in his changeup and curveball to induce seven swings and misses.
—Shed Long Jr. hit his second home run, drove in two runs, stole a base and tallied two hits in the doubleheader. The second baseman had struggled of late, with a hit in one of his last seven games coming into Thursday.
—No. 10 prospect Kyle Lewis collected a hit in six at-bats, scored twice and walked twice in the doubleheader. The 25-year-old center fielder remains at the forefront of the AL Rookie of the Year race and leads all rookies in multiple categories including hits, walks and on-base percentage.
—No. 27 prospect Sam Haggerty extended his season-opening hit streak to eight games and finished the doubleheader with three hits in eight at-bats, three runs and two RBIs. The 26-year-old second baseman/left fielder was claimed off waivers from the Mets on Jan. 10 and promoted to the big leagues on Aug. 19.
St. Louis Cardinals
—Kwang-Hyun Kim delivered his second consecutive six-inning, three-hit start, allowing one unearned run, walking one and striking out three. The 32-year-old lefthander has given up just one earned run in 15.2 innings since moving to the starting rotation, allowing nine hits and walking four during that span.
—No. 13 prospect Johan Oviedo pitched five two-run innings, allowing four hits, walking two and striking out one but earned the loss in a 2-0 shutout. The 22-year-old righthander led with his four-seamer that averaged 95.1 mph and got three swings and misses with his above-average slider.
—Dylan Carlson, the No. 10 prospect in baseball, hit safely in both games of the doubleheader to extend his hit streak to six games. The 2019 Texas League MVP was 2-for-6 with a double and a run scored to raise his average to .196.
