Adell Homer Highlights Angels Prospect Intrasquad Game

ANAHEIM, Calif.—The Angels held an intrasquad game that was primarily for prospects on Thursday. The teams were almost entirely made up of players based at the Angels alternate training site in Long Beach, with the notable exception of shortstop Andrelton Simmons.
Here are some highlights from the three-inning intrasquad exhibition, which was hardly formal. Players batted out of order and a coach played either left or right field every inning.
Jo Adell, the Angels top prospect and No. 3 overall on the BA Top 100, showed off his power with an opposite-field home run that banged hard off the out-of-town scoreboard in right field. After flying out to right in his first at-bat against Jose Rodriguez, Adell recovered from a big swing and miss to launch his home run on the very next pitch. It was a no-doubt shot on a line that put his team up, 2-0. He walked in his final plate appearance of the day, again recovering from a big swing and miss to lay off a hard slider in the dirt for ball four.
Jordyn Adams, the Angels No. 3 prospect, impressed a day earlier when he worked a long at-bat against Angels closer Hansel Robles and drew a walk. Between Wednesday and Thursday, he also made every defensive play in center field look easy with clean routes and showed his arm strength with a throw from center field to the plate in the air, albeit slightly up the line. Adams showed off his impressive plate discipline, but he hasn’t made much impact when he swings the bat. He grounded out weakly to the left side in his other at-bat Wednesday and in his lone at-bat Thursday.
Chris Rodriguez, the Angels No. 5 prospect, started and faced six batters in his first extended action against live hitters since having season-ending back surgery last year. He gave up one hit, walked three and struck out two. More impressive than the stat line was the quality of his stuff. He drew a swing and miss from every batter he faced, including Simmons on a fastball he blew by the Angels shortstop. Rodriguez primarily worked off his fastball and slider in the outing. He got Jose Briceno and Arismendy Alcantara, both of whom have major league time, to swing through sliders his strikeouts. He also drew swings and misses from Simmons and Michael Hermosillo, both of whom are big leaguers, as well as Adell.
Hector Yan, the Angels No. 9, prospect, proved a tough at-bat for righthanded hitters. The 21-year-old lefty faced six batters, all righties, and induced four ground balls to the left side. His fastball and slider both proved tough to square up, and he induced a few swings and misses as well. Yan also generated a routine fly ball to center field and allowed a triple down the left-field line to Elliot Soto.
