Intrigue is prevalent among the international scouting community as the baseball world readies for the free agency signing period to open on July 2.
There’s little consensus among scouts on how to rank the 2018 class from top to bottom. This year’s class is also sandwiched between an exciting 2017 class and a very impressive group coming in 2019, only compounding uncertainty for this year’s group of prospects, according to Baseball America’s Ben Badler.
That being said, there’s certainly firepower at the top, headlined by Cuban prospect Victor Victor Mesa—this year’s top international free agent.
MLB has yet to declare Mesa a free agent, though, meaning he won’t sign right away on July 2nd.
Others, like Marco Luciano and Diego Cartaya, can sign right away and have been courted by MLB teams.
A full list of Baseball America’s Top 50 international free agents is below, complete with a full scouting report and video breakdown. Please keep in mind this year’s list also includes Cuban players who are subject to the international bonus pools. While 21-year-old outfielder Victor Mesa is an exception, most of the top Cuban players out now are in the same age group as the top 16-year-old players from the Dominican Republic and Venezuela. However, due to the circumstances of how Cuban players are scouted and become eligible to sign, there are Cuban players who might belong on the list but have been omitted until more information on them becomes available.
