Following on the heels of signing Aaron Judge and outfitting him in its cleats and accessories, Adidas revealed two brand-new updates to its baseball cleat lineup just in time for Opening Day 2018.
The 2018 Boost Icon offers full-length Boost midsole cushioning, the brand’s most popular cushioning model. Adidas says the midsole cushioning helps eliminate cleat pressure. The new 2018 Adizero Afterburner features the lightest weight cleat in baseball, the brand says.
Adidas aims to push what it calls “cleathead culture,” with the 2018 line a “natural extension of the fusion of sports and culture.” Each cleat debuts in five different colorways, with every version featuring gold accents.
The 2018 Boost Icon, also known as the Icon 4, was designed for comfort for the five-tool player. Inspired by sneaker silhouettes, the internal support structure is meant to provide elevated lateral stability. A tongue-less construction with a widened lacing system aims for a natural lockdown fit, while a breathable mesh upper with TPU overlays add abrasion protection and durability. The Protrax 5×4 cleat configuration was designed for dirt penetration with minimal cleat pressure, using a rigid plate to help with acceleration.
The 2018 Adizero Afterburner, with its lightweight construction, was designed for speed players. A breathable compression bootie allows for flexibility and movement, while a wrap design of the brand’s Sprintskin upper—using vacu-forming construction—looks to create an aerodynamic form. A new full-length EVA midsole doubles the thickness of the previous model to improve cushioning. With a minimal cleat configuration inspired by track spikes, the Afterburner puts a focus on acceleration.
The Adidas cleats debuted in time for Opening Day.
