MLB Reveals Special Event Uniforms for 2018
Happy Mother’s Day. Happy Father’s Day. And, while the MLB is at it, let’s take special note of Jackie Robinson Day, Memorial Day Weekend and Independence Day. All five special events will get customized uniform treatment by MLB in 2018, whether a uniform, cap or socks.
While the on-field look differs from a traditional day in the league, sales of the New Era (caps), Majestic (jersey) and Stance (socks) products will also look a little different, with proceeds going to MLB-designated charities.
Jackie Robinson Day kicks off the special events on April 15, the 71st anniversary of Robinson’s MLB debut. All players and on-field personnel will wear “42” in his honor and on-field uniform elements this year include a commemorative patch on all team caps and jersey sleeves. Fans will also see a new lightweight hooded fleece during batting practice and in the dugout.
For Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 13, players will wear newly designed caps highlighted by a pink crown and team color brim. A matching pair of pink socks is optional for every player and the regular team jersey will include a pink ribbon on the left chest.
Memorial Day weekend, May 26-28, includes a camouflage-designed cap from New Era, the 10th year of a special cap for the weekend. A matching jersey will be worn by players and managers for a sixth straight year. The right side of the caps feature five starts to represent the five branches of the U.S. military, while stars stitched onto the uniform’s right sleeves and sewn across the Stance socks carry the trend forward. The Toronto Blue Jays will wear four maple leafs to signify the four branches of the Canadian military.
June 17 marks Father’s Day, which will include a light blue cap with team color brim. Players also have the option of a multi-pattern blue-dyed sock.
The Independence Day celebration, running July 2-4 will feature the 11th consecutive summer of a stars and stripes-decorated cap with red, white and blue team logos. For the fourth year, clubs will wear a matching jersey. And for the second year, player socks will match the uniform with stars and stripes. The Blue Jays will wear an alternate red jersey on Canada Day, July 1.
Throughout the special events, the MLB will support the Jackie Robinson Foundation, Susan G. Komen, Prostate Cancer Foundation and Stand Up To Cancer charities.
