World Baseball Classic Sets Attendance Mark

The 2017 edition of the World Baseball Classic—which has surpassed all expectations on the field—is doing the same at the turnstiles.

With the three championship round games remaining, the WBC has drawn 976,828 fans through two rounds, surpassing the previous mark of 885,212 in 2013 for the entire tournament. Attendance will surge past one million with the semifinals set for tonight and Tuesday at Dodger Stadium and the championship game Wednesday night.

This year’s WBC is 24 percent ahead of the 2013 version after two rounds as 788,299 people attended the first two rounds in 2013.

Saturday night’s pivotal contest between the United States and Dominican Republic at Petco Park drew a sellout of 43,002, the biggest crowd ever for a WBC game in the U.S.

The semifinals begin tonight at 9 p.m. ET with Puerto Rico facing the Netherlands, while Tuesday sees the U.S. battling Japan. The winners then play Wednesday night at 9 p.m. to crown a champion.
