2016 MLB Draft and International Bonus Pools
Baseball America has obtained the bonus pools for the 2016 draft and international signing period. Each draft pick in the top 10 rounds comes with an assigned bonus slot, and the each team’s bonus pool is the sum of each bonus slot.
As we’ve projected, the Reds’ draft bonus pool exceeds the Phillies’, even though Philadelphia had the worst record in 2015. This is because Cincinnati won the first pick in the Competitive Balance Lottery last July. Also of note, the Padres’ bonus pool ranks third. This is because San Diego owns six of the top 85 picks.
The Collective Bargaining Agreement stipulates that bonus slots are to rise in line with MLB revenue growth. This year, bonus slots are just over 4.6 percent higher than they were last year. Using this figure, we estimate the first overall pick to come with a pool allotment of just over $9 million.
