2016 Top 100 Draft Prospects

While spring hasn’t technically sprung, the spring follow season is well underway. College baseball is in full swing, and high school action has started in most parts of the country.

Teams spent all summer, fall and winter identifying the top players in the nation, lining up tentative draft boards and figuring out which players they might target in the spring. Now, scouts have begun to bear down on players, and upper tier draft prospects have started to distinguish themselves.

These rankings reflect the early reviews on players from this spring, but also give credence to each player’s track record and experience prior to this small sample. Players have moved up or down since we released our High School and College Top 100 rankings, both because the evaluations have changed and Baseball America has accumulated more information.

While Baseball America is concerned with accurately prognosticating how the draft will unfold, these rankings don’t necessarily reflect where we believe these players will be taken. These 2016 Top 100 draft rankings are based on how we value each player’s major league potential, and the risks that come with each player.

One notable riser is Nick Senzel, who sits at No. 2 on the list. Senzel is off to a fantastic start, both offensively and defensively, and is in the mix to be one of the first few players taken.

One notable slide is that of Kyle Funkhouser, who returned to Louisville for his senior season after the Dodgers selected him in the supplemental first round in 2015. The early reviews on Funkhouser this spring are overwhelmingly poor, with his fastball velocity down to 88-91 mph, his command graded as below average and his offspeed stuff lacking consistency. We ranked Funkhouser based on his track record, and previously glowing evaluations. If he can right the ship, he could move back up by the next time we rank players. If he doesn’t correct his issues, there’s no telling how far he might slide.
