Army Hires Foster As New Coach
Jim Foster, the head coach at Rhode Island for nine seasons and associate head coach at Boston College the past two years, was named head coach at Army on Thursday.
Athletic director Boo Corrigan said in a statement that Foster is a good fit for the Black Knights.
“Jim brings a wealth of winning experience,” Corrigan said. “His commitment to excellence while upholding a standard fits well with our dedication to duty, honor, country. I am confident he will lead our baseball program to new levels of success and support our mission of developing leaders at West Point.”
Foster was the head coach at Rhode Island for nine seasons before moving to Boston College. At Army, he replaces Matt Reid, who led the Black Knights for the past four years.
Foster, 44, went 268-230-3 at Rhode Island, and is the winningest coach in program history. Under his direction, the Rams won at least 30 games for six straight seasons from 2008-13. At Boston College, Foster was pitching coach and helped coach Mike Gambino lead the Eagles this season to super regionals for the first time in school history. All-American righthander Justin Dunn, his star pupil, was drafted 19th overall by the Mets earlier this month.
The hiring of Foster will add a new dimension to the Army-Navy rivalry. Foster played at Providence for coach Paul Kostacopoulos, now the Navy coach.
