Liberty Coach Toman Resigns

Jim Toman unexpectedly resigned Friday after nine seasons as coach at Liberty, the school announced.

A search for Toman’s replacement has begun, director of athletics Jeff Barber said.

“During the last nine years, Jim has maintained a consistent passion for Liberty baseball and worked hard to continue to advance our program,” Barber said in a news release. “He guided our team to a number of signature wins, spotlighted by a Big South title in 2013 and reaching the finals of the NCAA Columbia Regional. I want to express my sincere appreciation to Jim for the impact he had on the lives of our student-athletes and Liberty baseball.”

Toman leaves with the second-most wins in program history and a record of 329-205-1. Liberty was 31-28 this season, winning nine of the final 11 to cross the 30-win mark for the 12th year in a row.

Toman led the Flames to the Columbia regional final in 2013, and Liberty earned its first-ever at-large bid in 2014. This year, Liberty lost to eventual-College World Series participant Coastal Carolina 1-0 in the Big South tournament final, missing out on a regional appearance.
