Walt Weiss Won’t Be Back With Rockies
Walt Weiss won’t be back as manager of the Rockies after four seasons, the club announced Monday.
Weiss’ three-year deal expired and no negotiations took place for an extension. The club termed his departure as “stepping down.”
“The Colorado Rockies announced today that Walt Weiss has decided to step down as manager. His three-year contract with the club ended with the 2016 season,” the Rockies said in a release.
The Denver Post reported the relationship between Weiss and general manager Jeff Bridich had become strained. Weiss was hired by previous GM Dan O’Dowd.
In a conference call with reporters, Bridich said he agreed with Weiss that it was time to move on.
“I agree with Walt, I think it was time to move on,” Bridich said. “Over the course of two years with he as manager and me as GM, we both put in a lot of work to make the relationship work.”
Weiss, 52, compiled a 283-365 record, the worst among the six managers in Rockies history. Weiss also played for the Rockies from 1994-97.
As for replacements, Bridich said the Rockies will look to internal and external candidates, but that there is no timeline, given that the decision to replace Weiss happened in the last day.
Previous managerial experience will be one of the factors, but not necessarily a deciding one, Bridich said, and he acknowledged that Triple-A manager Glenallen Hill would be a consideration.
“He would be somebody internally who would be considered,” Bridich said.
Decisions on Weiss’ coaching staff will come at a later time, Bridich said, adding that he believes the Rockies’ managerial job is an attractive one.
