Corey Seager, Baseball America’s Rookie of the Year, was named NL Rookie of the Year on Monday by the Baseball Writers Association of America.
The Dodgers’ shortstop was a unanimous choice, and the 17th Dodger to win the award, but the first since Todd Hollandsworth in 1996.
“It’s awesome to bring (the award) back, to bring it back to L.A.,” Seager said in a conference call with reporters. “It hasn’t been there in a while. It’s pretty cool to be connected to all the guys who’ve come before you.”
Seager is the second player in a row to win the BBWAA NL rookie award in an unanimous vote, following the Cubs’ Kris Bryant. Seager is the fourth shortstop to win the award in the NL, following Alvin Dark in 1948, Rafael Furcal in 2000 and Hanley Ramirez in 2006.
Although Seager opened the season as the No. 1 prospect in the game, Seager said it wasn’t as easy as it looked.
“It was obviously a learning curve. You have to earn respect from your teammates, earn respect from your league,” he said. “You’re not playing for the awards. You’re playing for the team.”
As for where he goes from here, Seager says, “you can’t expect anything in this game. You have to be consistent in approach. It’s not an easy game. I don’t take anything for granted.”
