Coaching Changes At UMass, Towson

The end of the regular season this weekend marked the end of the tenure of two 30-year head coaches. Massachusetts coach Mike Stone retired following Friday’s season finale, as he announced he would do last July, and Towson announced Sunday that coach Mike Gottlieb was stepping down.

Gottlieb played for Towson and spent seven years as an assistant coach before taking over as head coach in 1988. He went 733-821-10 at his alma mater and led the Tigers to three NCAA Tournament appearances, most recently in 2013.

Towson went 20-34 this season and finished in last place in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Towson athletic director Tim Leonard in a statement thanked Gottlieb for his service.

“After several discussions over the past couple years, we felt like now is the best time to look for new leadership,” Leonard said. “We are committed to this program and want to bring in somebody that can build off the foundation that was set by Mike.”

Like Gottlieb, Stone spent the last 30 years as head coach of his alma mater. He came back to UMass in 1988 after five seasons as head coach of Vermont. He is the winningest coach in program history and finished his career with a 751-785-5 overall record, including back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 1995-96.

UMass finished the season at 15-32 and in 11th place in the Atlantic-10 Conference.
