For the second year in a row, Florida was the last team to punch its ticket to the College World Series. The Gators on Monday night clinched their spot in the CWS field with a 3-0 victory against Wake Forest in the decisive Game 3 of the Gainesville Super Regional.
Wake Forest defeated Florida, the No. 3 national seed, earlier Monday in the resumption of Game 2, which was suspended Sunday due to heavy rainfall. But led by their pitching staff and J.J. Schwarz, the Gators bounced back in the nightcap.
Righthanders Brady Singer, Tyler Dyson and Alex Faedo, who was drafted 18th overall by the Tigers earlier in the night, combined for a four-hit shutout. Dyson threw five critical innings of middle relief after a rain delay knocked Singer out of the game after just two innings. Faedo, who threw 72 pitches Saturday in Game 1, threw the final two innings to close out the victory in his first relief appearance of the season. The junior threw 30 pitches Monday, struck out three batters and held the Demon Deacons to one hit and one walk.
Florida took the lead on Mike Rivera’s RBI single in the second inning and Schwarz gave it all the separation it needed with a two-run home run in the third. Schwarz’s home run was his second of this year’s super regional, and sixth in eight career super regional games.
Florida will make its sixth trip to the CWS in eight years. It is the third team from the Southeastern Conference to join this year’s Omaha field, joining Louisiana State and Texas A&M.
The Gainesville Super Regional was the last to conclude, allowing the NCAA on Monday to set the CWS schedule. The tournament will begin Saturday with Cal State Fullerton taking on Oregon State, the No. 1 national seed, at 3 p.m. ET. Florida State and LSU, the No. 4 national seed, will follow at 8 p.m.
The second bracket will begin play Sunday with Texas A&M taking on Louisville, the No. 7 national seed, at 2 p.m. Texas Christian, the No. 6 national seed, will play Florida in the nightcap at 7 p.m.
The losers of Saturday’s games will play an elimination game Monday at 2 p.m. The winners will face off at 7 p.m. that night. Sunday’s losers will play at 2 p.m. Tuesday, with the winners taking the field at 8 p.m.
The winners of the two brackets will play a best-of-three series in the CWS Finals beginning Monday, June 26 at 7 p.m.
