California League All-Star Game
As all-star rosters are announced, we’ll provide full details and a look at which prospects are most worthy of your attention.
California League All-Star Game
When: June 20.
Where: Rawhide Ballpark, Visalia, Calif.
Prospects To Watch:
Brendan Rodgers, SS, Lancaster (Rockies): The No. 3 overall pick in the 2015 is putting together one of the best seasons in all of professional baseball. A plus-plus hitter with plus power potential, Rodgers is hitting .400 on the year with 19 doubles, 11 home runs and 41 RBIs. His 1.115 OPS is second-highest in the minors. A potential all-star who can stick at shortstop, Rodgers is one of the brightest prospects in baseball.
A.J. Puk, LHP, Stockton (Athletics): The No. 6 overall pick last June has been absolutely electric in his first full professional season. With a 98-mph fastball and a side-to-side slider that is one of the best secondary pitches in the minors, Puk leads all starters in professional baseball with 14.42 strikeouts-per-nine innings (87 strikeouts in 54.1 innings). He has limited opponents to a .194 batting average, one home run, and a 1.12 WHIP. Puk’s only issue is occasional wildness, but the 6-foot-7, 220-pound lefthander has been lights out, regardless.
Eric Lauer, LHP, Lake Elsinore (Padres): The third of three Padres first-round picks last season, Lauer led the NCAA in ERA in 2016 and now leads the Cal League with a 2.34 ERA. A master commander of the baseball who can land four pitches for strikes, Lauer has 70 strikeouts and 16 walks in 57.2 innings. He is joined by rotation-mates Joey Lucchesi and Cal Quantrill, both of whom also rank in the top 10 in the league in ERA, on the South Division All-Stars.
Braden Bishop, OF, Modest0 (Mariners): Bishop is always a threat to make a highlight-reel catch in center field. The former wide receiver recruit uses his outstanding speed and athletic instincts to cover huge swaths of ground in the outfield, drawing comparisons to Kevin Pillar for his defensive excellence. Combined with his top-tier defense, Bishop is hitting .311 with a .410 on-base percentage as the Nuts’ leadoff hitter.
