Rob Vaughn, associate head coach to John Szefc at Maryland, was promoted Thursday to head coach, replacing Szefc, who left earlier this month to become the coach of Virginia Tech.
Vaughn played at Kansas State, and later served as the volunteer assistant coach on his alma mater’s staff with Szefc. When Szefc was hired by Maryland after the 2012 season, Vaughn followed him to College Park. He spent five years as an assistant coach of the Terrapins, working with the hitters. He rose to associate head coach before the 2017 season.
In a statement, Vaughn thanked Szefc for helping him start his career and said it was a great opportunity to take over as head coach at Maryland.
“I truly believe that this program is just scratching the surface of what it can become,” Vaughn said. “I am going to work extremely hard to assemble a staff that has a passion for developing men of character and that will continue to recruit the best players in the country.”
Vaughn helped guide Maryland to the NCAA Tournament in three of the past four years, including back-to-back super regional appearances in 2014-2015. The Terrapins went 38-23 this season and went 1-2 in the Winston-Salem Regional. Maryland has won more than 30 games for five straight seasons, a program record.
Vaughn, 29, is the youngest head coach in a Power Five conference. Oakland co-head coaches Jacke Healey (28) and Colin Kaline (28) and New Orleans coach Blake Dean (29) are the only younger head coaches in the country.
