Braves Lead Way In All-Time No. 1 And Top 100 Prospects

Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna ranks No. 1 on our latest Baseball America Top 100 Prospects list. It might not be a surprise to see a Brave lead the rankings, because it’s been rather commonplace over the years.

This is the 29th Top 100 and the sixth time that a Braves prospect has ranked No. 1. Not only is that the most No. 1 appearances, it’s as many as any two other teams combined.

We won’t know what Acuna turns out to be for quite a while, but the previous Braves No. 1s have had a pretty good track record. Chipper Jones (No. 1 in 1993) was just elected to the Hall of Fame. Andruw Jones (No. 1 in 1996 and 1997) was a 10-time Gold Glove winner, a five-time all-star and hit 434 home runs. Jason Heyward (No. 1 in 2010) has struggled at the plate after signing a massive free agent contract with the Cubs, but he is a four-time Gold Glove winner who has posted 34.9 bWAR so far. Steve Avery (No. 1 on the first Top 100 in 1990) had the least significant career, but it was largely because of a shoulder injury. He went 47-25, 3.17 with a 122 ERA+ from 1991-1993, but injuries largely derailed his career after that.

When it comes to total Top 100 appearances, the Braves also are runaway leaders.
