Drafted in the 16th round (470th overall) by the Colorado Rockies in 2016 (signed for $100,000).
View Draft Report
Haynie stood out for his righthanded power and arm strength coming out of high school in 2013, but was firmly committed to Alabama and went undrafted. After three years of playing for the Crimson Tide, those remain his two best tools. Haynie has led Alabama in home runs each of the last two years, hitting 10 this spring. His power comes with significant swing and miss, however, and he is a career .203 hitter. Haynie is big for a catcher (he's listed at 6-foot-5, 225 pounds), but he is a good athlete and moves well enough behind the plate. His receiving has improved this spring to go with his above-average arm strength. Haynie will have to find a way to make more contact at the plate, but his power and catch-and-throw skills give him a chance.

Haynie has two plus tools that make him an attractive prospect: his raw power and his throwing arm. He's on the big side for a catcher at 6-foot-5, 230 pounds and has a chance to be an impact player at Alabama as a freshman. Haynie will have to work hard to maintain his flexibility and athleticism at that size to remain behind the plate, and his technique is unrefined. He does have decent hands, so he has a chance to catch long-term. He was considered a tough sign.
