Carter is a standout athlete with tremendous pure stuff and arm talent who has never quite put everything together in his three years at Vanderbilt. Carter was a top-200 prospect out of high school in the 2021 class, though raw as a pitcher at the time. He remains that after a three-year career with the Commodores. The righthander posted a 5.62 ERA over three seasons and 73.2 innings while working mostly out of the bullpen and has consistently been hindered by well below-average control and a career 19.5% walk rate. A 6-foot-4, 237-pound righthander, Carter has an extremely well-developed physique with broad shoulders and a strong lower half and sits around 96-98 mph with a fastball that has been up to 103. In addition to elite velocity, Carter’s fastball has tons of cutting action that should make it difficult to barrel up if he can sharpen his command. Carter is reliant on the fastball. He throws it more than 70% of the time and it is the pitch he’s able to land for strikes most consistently. He also has a firm upper-80s changeup and has experimented with a mid-80s slider and a curveball a few ticks slower with more depth. He casts the curveball frequently and has struggled to throw the slider for strikes. While Carter’s future is almost certainly in the bullpen, many pro teams are excited about his pure arm talent and are hoping to coax more control out of him in the future.
