Gardner was throwing in the 87-90 mph range during the fall of 2021, but as the spring came and the weather warmed, so did his fastball velocity. Scouts saw the 6-foot-5, 195-pound righthander getting up to the 96-97 mph range during the spring season, with a fast and short arm action. He posted a 3.44 ERA over 12 starts and 70.2 innings for Big Bend (Wash.) JC, while striking out 97 batters (12.4 K/9) and walking 29 (4.0 BB/9). Gardner has also thrown a slider and changeup in the lower 80s, but he is a raw, projection arm who might be too pricey to buy out of an Arizona State commitment.
