A third baseman and righthander for St. Mary’s, Santiago has slowly come into his own as a pitching prospect during his time in college, though he continued to play both ways this spring. He hit .287/.363/.525 with 10 home runs and nine doubles as the team’s third baseman, but pro scouts are more enamored with his upside on the mound. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound righty throws his fastball as hard as 97 mph but sits in the 92-94 mph range out of the bullpen with impressive induced vertical break. Santiago is still developing feel for a breaking ball in the upper 70s that has been in the low 80s at times, but the pitch needs plenty more refinement. Santiago would play third base and come in to relieve games for St. Mary’s this spring, and he posted a 4.50 ERA over 20 innings, while striking out 20 (24.7 K%) and walking nine (11.1 BB%).
