Primarily a position player for most of his high school career, Miles began throwing harder and harder late in his high school senior season and became a prize signing for Missouri. He stepped into the Tigers weekend rotation as a freshman before coronavirus ended the 2020 season. Draft eligible as a sophomore, Miles pitched his way out of draft consideration, with a 7.01 ERA and 76 hits in just 60 innings. His junior season this year wasn’t dramatically better. He went 5-5, 6.20 with 90 hits, 23 walks and 67 strikeouts in 69.2 innings. Miles has plenty of velocity. He has touched 98 mph and sits at 92-94 mph with his two and four-seamers. But with a clean delivery and very average movement, Miles’ fastball gets squared up too often. Opponents hits .358 against his heater. His average 1-to-7 mid-70s curveball is his best out pitch. His fringe-average harder slider is less effective and his well below-average changeup is at this point is a favor to hitters. Miles has plenty of arm strength and a smooth delivery. He has shown flashes of dominance including effective outings against Tennessee and a 12-strikeout finale against Georgia. His lack of consistency and hittable fastball makes him a developmental project.
