School: Wake Forest
Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted
Age At Draft: 21.3
BA Grade: 45/High
Tools: Fastball: 65. Slider: 60. Curveball: 40. Changeup: 40. Control: 45.
Massey was one of the most dominant relievers in the country during the 2023 season, his first with Wake Forest after transferring from Tulane. He posted a 2.59 ERA and struck out 47.2% of the batters he faced, then moved into a starting role in 2024. He was significantly less dominant in the rotation, with a 4.76 ERA and 32.1% strikeout rate and some time missed to a back injury. A 6-foot-5, 230-pound righthander, Massey has one of the most intriguing fastballs in the class. He averaged 93 mph and touched 96 in 2024. Pitching as a reliever, his fastball played a tick higher on average and at peak. What separates Massey’s fastball from others is the 20 inches of induced vertical break, cutting life and deception that comes from a delivery in which he does an excellent job hiding the ball behind his ear until as late as possible. Massey’s late-breaking low-80s slider has looked like a plus pitch at times and, like his fastball, it looked better when he pitched as a reliever than it did when he was stretched out this spring. He toyed with a mid-70s curveball and threw a mid-80s changeup as a starter, though he primarily relied on his fastball/slider duo as a reliever. Massey profiles best as a reliever in pro ball and could have a lethal two-pitch mix.
