A pitchability lefthander, Phillips stood out over the showcase circuit for his feel to land four pitches and while his stuff isn’t explosive, he looks like an advanced pitcher Listed at 6-foot, 178 pounds, Phillips throws a fastball in the upper 80s and lower 90s currently, as well as a mid-70s curveball with 12-to-6 shape, a slider around 80 and an 82-83 mph changeup with solid arm-side fading action. Despite pitching in the 89-91 mph range at the Area Code Games last summer, Phillips generated a surprising number of whiffs—11 against just nine batters—at the event and flashed solid secondaries. Phillips works from the third base side of the rubber and repeats his delivery well, throwing from a three-quarter slot and finishing in line with good direction to the plate. While there are other pitchers in the class with more stuff or physical projection, it’s easy to see the Oklahoma State commit winding up with solid stuff across the board and above-average command that helps the entire arsenal play up. Phillips is old for the class and will be 19 on draft day, as well as a draft-eligible sophomore in 2024 if he makes it to campus.
