Track Record: McGeary set the all-time NCAA Division II record with 75 career home runs at Colorado Mesa and won back-to-back D-II national player of the year awards. He showed his skills translated with a wood bat during a standout showing in the Appalachian League, leading the Cubs to draft him in the 15th round and sign him for $125,000. McGeary continued to mash in his first full season in 2023. He finished among the organization leaders in hits (120), home runs (19), RBI (88), total bases (202) and OPS (.859) and rose to Double-A.
Scouting Report: McGeary is a massive 6-foot-4 slugger with immense strength. He has a simple, level righthanded swing that stays in the zone and pulverizes both fastballs and breaking balls. He has plenty of bat speed, stays balanced and has a keen eye for the strike zone. McGeary’s swing is grooved and he hits the ball on the ground too often, but he swings at the right pitches and hits the ball harder than almost anyone. He uses the whole field and can clear any stadium when he gets the ball in the air. McGeary’s bat will play, but he must find a position. He was primarily a DH in college and is still learning to play first base, where he is well below-average with slow reactions and poor hands.
The Future: McGeary’s bat gives him a chance to keep rising. He should see Triple-A in 2024.
