  Heading into his senior year at East Carolina, Spivey’s career ERA in three seasons with the Pirates was 10.58. This year he was the American Athletic Conference pitcher of the year, becoming the first reliever to ever win that award. Spivey went 8-0, 2.83 with five saves. He struck out 76 while allowing 70 hits and 19 walks in 76 innings, serving as a multi-inning moment-of-truth reliever. Spivey’s success is built around a hard, 84-89 mph slider that morphs into a cutter. He can make it bigger or tighten it up. It generates swings and misses when it’s bigger, and weak contact when it’s harder. Spivey’s 90-92 mph below-average fastball works with his slider because he can spot it well. With above-average control and a quality breaking ball, Spivey looks like a quality senior sign as a reliever.
