Commit/Drafted: Never Drafted
Age At Draft: 20.8
BA Grade:40/High
Tools:Fastball: 45. Slider: 55. Curveball: 55. Changeup: 50. Control: 50.
A 6-foot-1, 190-pound lefthander, Coupet racked up plenty of strikeouts as a Friday and Saturday starter for Ohio State in his 2022 sophomore season. He posted a 5.71 ERA over 64.2 innings and struck out 98 batters—tied for third with Adam Mazur in the Big Ten—but also walked 41. He missed time with a hamstring injury during the 2023 season, but was excellent when on the mound, with a 2.12 ERA in 10 starts and 46.2 innings, a career-high 34.6% strikeout rate and a 7.7% walk rate that was nearly half of his 2022 rate. Coupet throws a high-spin, four-pitch arsenal that’s led by a fastball that sits around 90 mph and was up to 94 this spring. His best offering is a low-80s slider that he used about 35% of the time this spring and generated a 56% miss rate. He’ll throw a mid-70s curveball that has more vertical depth to righthanded hitters, but the slider is a more consistent offering overall. Both pitches have spin rates north of the 2,800 rpm range with above-average potential. On top of the breaking balls, Coupet has generated plenty of whiffs with a mid-80s changeup. He has a high-effort delivery and carries significant reliever risk in pro ball, but could be a deceptive, junk-ball pitcher who stymies hitters with spin and offspeed.
