Long is a powerful and physical, 6-foot-2, 215-pound third baseman with tons of raw power and arm strength. Long touched 97 mph in high school, but it’s his bat that scouts are excited about, particularly after he hit .340/.417/.704 with 16 home runs and 11 doubles for Arizona State during the 2021 season. Those 16 home runs were good for second in program history for a single season by a freshman, behind only 2020 first overall pick Spencer Torkelson. Long didn’t quite match his 2021 performance in 2022, hitting only .294/.377/.525 with seven home runs and 10 doubles. Long did manage solid average exit velocities and scouts have put 70-grade raw power on him, but as a likely first baseman or corner outfielder at the next level there is plenty of pressure on his bat. Long has a strong arm that could be an asset in the outfield, but as a draft-eligible sophomore he has the leverage to return to school if he wants to try and have a bounce-back season in 2023.

Long has been on the radar for Four Corners scouts through much of his high school career. Originally committed to Arkansas, he’s now signed to hometown Arizona State with a good chance of making it to campus. Long is a gamer type with a tough, competitive mindset and a stocky, muscular build. He generates big exit velocities with a fluid swing and plenty of bat speed. He’s got plus raw power, but with that pop comes plenty of swing and miss. Long is a below-average defender at the hot corner but with a plus arm throwing from different arm slots. He also uses that arm strength on the mound, delivering a fastball in the low-to-mid-90s, touching as high as 96-97, and a curveball with good shape. With further refinement and coaching Long could have more upside on the mound as a late-inning power reliever.
