After a solid freshman season at Central Florida, Freeland broke out as a sophomore, hitting .282/.419/.570. He showed more power (11 home runs) while cutting his strikeout rate to 19%. Freeland has an excellent sense of the strike zone and solid hand-eye coordination. He knows how to catch up to a quality fastball, but he can be caught out in front by a pitcher who pitches backwards. Freeland has only fringe-average productive power, but he does a good job of finding pitches he can drive. Freeland’s accurate, plus arm plays at shortstop and he has a quick transfer, but there are concerns he doesn’t move well enough to stick there as a pro. He’s a below-average runner. Freeland’s internal clock and instincts are impressive, and he should be able to stay in the infield at second or third base. As a hitter with solid on-base skills, he’s the kind of multi-positional pro who could end up exceeding expectations.

Track Record: Despite being born with a clubfoot which required multiple surgeries to correct, Freeland has thrived on the diamond. First, he starred at Central Florida, where he swatted 18 home runs across two seasons before the Dodgers selected him in the third round of the 2022 draft. Two years later, he was one of the system’s highest risers. In 2024, Freeland moved from High-A to Triple-A and racked up a system-best 32 doubles while hitting 18 home runs and stealing 31 bases in the process.

Scouting Report: Inside and outside the organization, Freeland drew raves from evaluators for his well-rounded skill set. In the batter’s box, he can work an at-bat until he gets the pitch he likes before spraying a line drive to the outfield—if not over the fence. He’s got quick hands, excellent bat speed and the ability to manipulate the barrel into different parts of the strike zone. Defensively, Freeland has a chance to stick at shortstop but second or third base are also viable options. His bat would profile at either spot. Freeland’s above-average arm makes third base his likeliest non-shortstop defensive home. He’s an above-average runner and was one of just four players in the minor leagues with 30 or more doubles and stolen bases. Evaluators were also particularly fond of Freeland’s makeup, citing a player dripping with the kind of confidence necessary to remain unfazed in key situations.

The Future: Shortstop is one of the few spots where the reigning World Series champions have a bit of a question mark. If they do not sign a free agent to take over the role, Freeland has a shot to earn the job at some point in 2025. If not, he’ll head back to Triple-A to continue getting reps at other infield spots after having played exclusively at shortstop from Double-A onward.

Track Record: Freeland was born with a clubfoot and had multiple surgeries as an infant to correct it. His right foot is smaller than his left and he has limited ankle mobility, but he never let it derail his baseball aspirations. Freeland hit 18 home runs in two seasons as Central Florida’s starting shortstop and was drafted by the Dodgers in the third round as a draft-eligible sophomore. He played his first full season at High-A Great Lakes in 2023 and showed standout defensive ability as well as promising underlying offensive metrics.

Scouting Report: Freeland is a physical, athletic switch-hitter who competes at a high effort level. He’s an aggressive swinger, but he controls the strike zone and shows the potential to hit for average and power from the left side. He has an explosive lefthanded swing and hit .262 with a .740 OPS from the left side last year compared to .149 with a .579 OPS batting righthanded. He has to improve his plate coverage and potentially drop his righthanded swing, but he has the potential to be a fringe-average hitter who reaches double-digit home runs. Freeland is a loose mover at shortstop despite his big, 6-foot-2 frame and below-average speed. He positions himself well with excellent instincts and covers enough ground to stay at the position. He projects to be a steady, average defender with a plus, accurate arm.

The Future: Freeland’s abilities to play shortstop and hit lefthanded give him a path to the majors. He’ll move to Double-A in 2024.

A 6-foot-2, 180-pound shortstop who showed good feel to hit over the summer and fall, scouts are intrigued with Freeland as an offensive-oriented infielder. A switch-hitter committed to Central Florida, Freeland has solid power with a chance to get to fringe-average or average juice in-game, and some scouts think he can develop into an average hitter as well, with more impact from the left side than the right. While Freeland has shown solid hands, good arm strength and runs well in a straight line, scouts universally believe he’ll have to move to either second or third in the future because of a club foot he was born with. Without knowing, you likely wouldn’t be able to tell by watching him on the field, but it does limit his lateral mobility. Even still, Freeland has done enough with the bat to get scouts excited, though because of the shorter 2020 draft and questions about his medical, teams might prefer he go to college and prove it.
