When Lipcius began his career at Tennessee in 2017, some of his future Volunteer teammates had yet to play high school baseball. His twin brother Andre was drafted and signed out of Tennessee in 2019. But thanks to a redshirt for a foot injury and the coronavirus pandemic, Luc played his sixth season at Tennessee in 2022. Given a chance to come back, he was one of the best sluggers in the Southeastern Conference, hitting .313/.466/.667 with 19 home runs. But how much of that is based on Lipcius development as a selective slugger with above-average power, and how much of it is a grown man beating up on much younger competition? Evaluating what to do with Lipcius has to start with his age. At 24, he’s several months older than Juan Soto, currently a five-year MLB veteran. He has the talent to play pro ball, but his age will give teams reasons to hesitate.
