Houghtby stood out as a premium defensive shortstop in the Cape Cod League in 2017, but he never hit until his senior year this spring. The lefthanded hitter batted .341 with 12 doubles, five home runs and 38 RBIs for San Diego, all significantly above his previous career highs. Houghtby has a slick glove that fits anywhere on the infield. He projects best at second base with his average arm, but he can handle shortstop and third base as needed. Houghtby is a fringe-average runner, but he has some lateral quickness and average range. He provides utility value as a defender and should be drafted as a senior sign.
