Dunn’s outstanding makeup and grinder mentality makes the Utah second baseman a favorite of many local area scouts. While small in stature at 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds, Dunn was leading all Utah hitters with a .350/.455/.554 slash line through early May. He is an at least average hitter with solid bat-to-ball skills and a short swing that helps him line doubles from gap to gap. Dunn possesses below-average power, but he understands his game and doesn’t try to change his swing to sell out for power. He’s a plus runner but not especially quick at the jump, so he doesn’t steal as many bases as expected. His below-average arm limits him to second base, but his speed could allow him to try center field in the future. Dunn is expected to be drafted later on Day 2.

BA Grade: 40/Medium
Track Record: A Yankees 11th-round pick out of Utah in 2019, Dunn reached Triple-A in 2022, then after the season the Phillies selected him with the final pick in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft. Dunn never hit more than seven home runs in a season in either college or pro ball, but he slugged 21 homers in 2023 for Double-A Reading, then continued his success in the Arizona Fall League. In november, the Brewers acquired him in a prospect swap for second baseman Robert Moore and outfielder Hendry Mendez, then added Dunn to the 40-man roster.
Scouting Report: Entering his age-26 season, Dunn is old for a prospect, and while Reading is a hitter’s park, there are reasons to believe his steps forward in 2023 will carry over. He has a compact, physically mature frame at 5-foot-10, 185 pounds and a patient approach, walking at a 16% clip with his 82 walks the most in the Phillies farm system in 2023. Reading is a band box, but Dunn has at least plus raw power with an average exit velocity of 92 mph that would put him only behind Wes Clarkee among Brewers’ minor leaguers last year. Dunn has a short, simple lefthanded swing, but he did post a 28% strikeout rate. He’s a good fastball hitter who squares up high-end velocity, but he struggled with swing-and-miss against changeups. A solid-average runner, Dunn is a below-average defender with a below-average arm, primarily playing second base but with time at third and left field as well.
The Future: At 26, Dunn doesn’t have much projection left, but his ability to draw walks and hit for power could allow him to carve out a major league role. He should start 2024 in Triple-A nashville but could make his MLB debut later in the year.
