Popular MLB ‘Debut Patch’ Chase Returns In 2024 Topps Chrome Update

The chase for game-worn Rookie Debut Patch cards is returning to 2024 Topps Chrome Update, and this year’s checklist has an impressive roster.
The autographed relic cards inside the upcoming release will include more than 150 players who made their MLB debuts from June 1, 2023 through May 24 of this past season. Among those who fit in that window are 2024 National League Rookie of the Year candidates Jackson Merrill, Paul Skenes and Jackson Chourio, young Reds star Elly De La Cruz, Japanese pitching stars Shota Imanaga and Yoshinobu Yamamoto and American League rookie standouts Colton Cowser and Jackson Holliday.
It’s Holliday—the son of former big league slugger Matt Holliday—who was informed he’ll be on the front of the box.
“When Topps told me, ‘It’s the set with the debut patches,’ I thought that was pretty cool,” Holliday told ESPN. “I remember my first game earlier this year, wearing that patch, and it looked amazing in the card when I signed it a few weeks ago.”
The Rookie Debut Patch program started last season with Fanatics/Topps getting the cooperation of MLB and the MLB Players Association.
The patch is applied to a jersey sleeve of players who are set to make their debuts. After the game, MLB authenticates the patch, which is removed from the jersey and sent to Topps where the card is created and signed. As was the case last year, the cards will be issued as redemptions, except in the Breaker box SKU, where they’ll be inserted in the product.
The Anthony Volpe patch card from 2023 Update sold for $150,000 in July via a bounty offer.
A few others are currently listed on eBay.
The 2024 Topps Chrome Update will be sold in both Hobby, Jumbo and Breaker formats, with Hobby boxes containing 24 packs with four cards per pack and one autographed card guaranteed. Breaker boxes will have two autos and Jumbos will hold three signed cards.
The base set will consist of 200 cards on chromium stock with a checklist of players from the regular Topps Update set. More information on inserts, parallels and odds will be announced next month.
2024 Topps Chrome Update is set is available for pre-order on the Topps website this Thursday at noon, and will officially release on Nov. 13.
