2024 MLB Farm System Midseason Talent Rankings
Image credit: (Photo by Nick Cammett/Getty Images)
Now that the trade and signing deadlines have passed and we’ve updated team Top 30 Prospects rankings, we’re looking at how the farm system talent compares for all 30 MLB teams.
This is very much a snapshot in time. If we ranked this just a few weeks from now, James Wood and Jackson Holliday, our top two prospects, would graduate. If that happened, both the Orioles and Nationals would slide down several spots in these rankings. In another example, the Pirates rank has slid dramatically now that Jared Jones and Paul Skenes have graduated.
And we also have picked a prospect success story for each organization, which is a player who has significantly raised their prospect stock this year.

1. Baltimore Orioles
Top 100 Prospects: Jackson Holliday, 2B (2); Coby Mayo, 3B (12); Samuel Basallo, C (17); Heston Kjerstad, OF (26); Cade Povich, LHP (96)
2024 Prospect Success Story: Michael Forret, RHP
The Orioles are likely to steadily slide down the farm rankings over the next couple of years, but it’s because they are steadily graduating big league regulars and using their farm system depth to fill holes on the big league roster.

2024 Prospect Success Story: Gary Gill Hill, RHP
The Rays’ depth and top-end prospect talent had dipped in the past couple of years, especially on the pitching side, but they are back among the top tier of farm systems. Gary Gill Hill’s development gives the team a young, high-ceiling pitcher, but its the team’s infield depth that stands out.

2024 Prospect Success Story: Travis Sykora, RHP
The top of the Nationals’ system is carrying a lot of weight here, but having two of the top five prospects in baseball (James Wood and Dylan Crews) is a great way to start off a system, even if Wood is just a few games away from graduating.

Even as the Guardians have battled for the best record in the American League, they have also continued to build one of the best and deepest farm systems in the game. Winning the draft lottery and picking 1-1 sure helped.

2024 Prospect Success Story: Dillon Dingler, C
Until recently Detroit’s farm system rarely ever cracked the top 10, but the farm system is in much better shape these days. Detroit has a nice mix of polished hitters and the best pitching prospect in baseball (Jackson Jobe).

2024 Prospect Success Story: Logan Evans, RHP
Despite graduating a nice collection of talent in recent seasons, the Mariners continue to refill the cupboard as well as any organization. Colt Emerson, Lazaro Montes and Cole Young all rank within the Top 50 as well as four other prospects in the Top 100.

2024 Prospect Success Story: Brooks Baldwin, SS/2B
After overhauling their big league roster over the past offseason and again during this year’s trade deadline, the White Sox’s farm system is now bursting with talent. That’s especially true on the mound, where lefty Noah Schultz leads a pack of promising arms. Catcher Edgar Quero is looking like a steal as well.

The Red Sox have an enviable top of the system with Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony and Kyle Teel all ranking inside the Top 40. The system has solid depth with two additional Top 100 prospects in Braden Montgomery and Kristian Campbell.

2024 Prospect Success Story: Brandon Birdsell, RHP
The Cubs have a nice group at the top of their system, although it would look even better if Cade Horton had stayed healthy. Nevertheless, Moises Ballesteros, Matt Shaw, Jefferson Rojas, James Triantos and Matt Shaw make for an excellent nucleus, and a few young arms are beginning to bubble as well.

Top 100 Prospects: Dalton Rushing, C (36); Josue De Paula, OF (50); Alex Freeland, SS (97).
2024 Prospect Success Story: Alex Freeland, SS
Los Angeles dealt away a pair of its better prospects in Thayron Liranzo and Jeral Perez, but the Dodgers still have a group of intriguing prospects. Dalton Rushing leads the way, but lefty Jackson Ferris has made strides and low-level outfielders Zyhir Hope and Eduardo Quintero head a promising next wave.

2024 Prospect Success Story: Carson Palmquist, LHP
The Rockies system is deep with solid prospects, but it’s their combination at the top that ranks them among the top half of organizational talent rankings. Charlie Condon, Chase Dollander and Adael Amador present an enviable trio at the top.

2024 Prospect Success Story: Starlyn Caba, SS
Top prospect Andrew Painter is continuing to rehab from Tommy John surgery, but in the meantime players like Justin Crawford and Aidan Miller have taken steps forward. At the lowest levels, shortstop Starlyn Caba and catcher Eduardo Tait stood out among their peers in the Florida Complex League.

Top 100 Prospects: Jacob Wilson, SS (21); Nick Kurtz, 1B (58); Luis Morales, RHP (93).
2024 Prospect Success Story: Colby Thomas, OF
After years of rebuilding the farm system the Athletics have turned a corner in 2024. The performance of Jacob Wilson alongside the addition of Nick Kurtz give the Athletics a legitimate duo of impact position players. Pitcher Luis Morales ranks at the backend of the Top 100 but has big upside as a power righthander, and OF Henry Bolte could just as easily be the system’s prospect success story of 2024.

2024 Prospect Success Story: Adam Serwinowski, LHP
It’s been a rough year for the Reds’ farm system. Injuries have sidelined several top prospects (Alfredo Duno, Ty Floyd) and others like Leo Balcazar, Carlos Jorge, Connor Phillips and Lyon Richardson have struggled.

Top 100 Prospects: Thomas White, LHP (49); Max Meyer, RHP (52); Noble Meyer, RHP (71)
2024 Prospect Success Story: Javier Sanoja, 2B/OF
The good news for the Marlins started when they drafted a pair of high-upside arms in righty Noble Meyer and lefty Thomas White, both of whom earned spots in this year’s Futures Game. They then completely flipped their farm system by dealing many of the most valuable players from their big league roster.

19. New York Yankees
Top 100 Prospects: Jasson Dominguez, OF (7); Spencer Jones, OF (81).
2024 Prospect Success Story: Ben Rice, 1B
New York’s system is led by Jasson Dominguez, who has spent much of this season rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and a strained oblique. Behind him, Spencer Jones has shown upside but needs to make more contact, and many of their highest-value prospects have dealt with injuries or underperformance.

2024 Prospect Success Story: Hayden Birdsong, RHP
The Giants graduated lefty Kyle Harrison into the big league rotation and have found another viable starter in Hayden Birdsong, who has been excellent since making his debut. Marco Luciano has gotten sporadic playing time, and infielder Tyler Fitzgerald has given the big league club a shot in the arm. They also added a pair of sluggers in Dakota Jordan and James Tibbs III in the draft.

Top 100 Prospects: JJ Wetherholt, SS (24); Tink Hence, RHP (25); Quinn Mathews, LHP (60)
2024 Prospect Success Story: Quinn Mathews, LHP
The Cardinals have churned out homegrown talent for years without any true impact stars. That might change with 2024 first-rounder J.J. Wetherholt and top pitching prospect Tink Hence. Quinn Mathews has been one of the better 2024 breakouts and provides the Cardinals a third Top 100 prospect.

Arizona keeps succeeding at the MLB level, and there have been some success stories in the minors as well. Deyvison De Los Santos was traded at the deadline, and Adrian Del Castillo has regained his prospect status. But 2023 first-rounder Tommy Troy has struggled and 2022 first-rounder Druw Jones remains in Low-A.

2024 Prospect Success Story: Spencer Horwitz, 2B
Injuries to Ricky Tiedemann and several other top pitching prospects impacted the Blue Jays, as well as Orelvis Martinez’s PED suspension. The depth post trade deadline has taken a significant leap after years of being one of the shallowest systems in the game.

2024 Prospect Success Story: Alejandro Rosario, RHP
Graduating Evan Carter and Wyatt Langford to the big leagues hit Texas’ system hard, but toolsy teenager Sebastian Walcott provides plenty of upside for the coming years. They added burly bruiser Malcolm Moore in the draft, and have seen big jumps from righthanders Alejandro Rosario and Winston Santos over the course of the season.

Top 100 Prospects: Jac Caglianone, 1B (45)
2024 Prospect Success Story: Gavin Cross, OF
After a series of fallow years following the graduation of Bobby Witt Jr., among others, Kansas City’s system is on the rise. The organization now has a Top 100 prospect—2024 first-rounder Jac Caglianone —and catchers Blake Mitchell and Carter Jensen aren’t far off. Kansas City also has a host of intriguing players up and down the minor leagues.

2024 Prospect Success Story: Drake Baldwin, C
The Braves’ farm system is much heavier on pitching prospects than hitters, which makes sense considering the state of the big league club and its long-term contracts. Drake Baldwin gives the team a hitter to hope on, but the arms remain more impressive.

Pittsburgh’s pitching pipeline has been outstanding this season. Paul Skenes is a leading contender for Rookie of the Year, and Bubba Chandler and Thomas Harrington have been outstanding at the upper levels. Termarr Johnson has shown signs of emerging of late, and Pittsburgh added toolsy prep talent Konnor Griffin in the draft.

The Padres traded much of their Top 10 at the trade deadline. The system has Ethan Salas and Leo De Vries in the Top 100, but other than 2024 draft additions the rest of the system is pretty barren, and few Padres prospects are having productive seasons.
