The Angels pop-up prospect for 2016 turned out to be their 2014 25th-round pick from NAIA program Georgia Gwinnett. Carpenter improved his nutrition after 2015 and dropped 20 pounds, gaining the confidence he needed to put himself on the prospect map. Strictly a reliever coming into 2016, Carpenter took advantage of an early season injury to one of high Class A Inland Empire's starters and threw five scoreless innings in his first career start. He ran with the opportunity and got a promotion to Double-A Arkansas after five Cal League outings. Carpenter's stuff was better across the board in 2016, and he consistently threw it for strikes. His fastball sat 90-94 mph, and he showed that he could hold the velocity deeper into games with his starts with his improved physique. His slider flashes average, and his changeup could turn into a useable third pitch. Profiling now as a potential back-end starter, Carpenter will begin 2017 back in Double-A with a chance to rise to Triple-A Salt Lake sooner rather than later.
