Draft Tracker 2005

By The Staff of Baseball America
Last Update: June 6

Important caveat: The list is based strictly on talent and does not take the actual order of where teams draft in the first round into consideration.

1. Justin Upton, ss/of, Great Bridge HS, Chesapeake, Va.
6/5 Update: Has moved to third base late in HS season, but still the draft's top talent and looking more and more like the No. 1 pick to Arizona
2. Alex Gordon, 3b, U. of Nebraska
6/6 Update: Polished hitter has cemented role as top college position player with .526 OBP, 18 HRs; led Cornhuskers to super-regional round
3. Cameron Maybin, of, T.C. Roberson HS, Asheville, N.C.
6/6 Update: Clubs don’t doubt Maybin’s talent, but his reported asking price and the trend of drafting college players makes his draft position uncertain
4. Troy Tulowitzki, ss, Long Beach State U.
6/5 Update: If Alex Gordon falls to the Mariners at No. 3, it's not clear what will happen to Tulowitzki; there's no clear fit for the Long Beach State shortstop with other teams in the first 10 picks, though he's a top-10 talent.
5. Mike Pelfrey, rhp, Wichita State U.
6/5 Update: Outdueled by Wintrhop's Kevin Slowey on Friday; status unchanged
6. Luke Hochevar, rhp, U. of Tennessee
6/6 Update: Tired late against Austin Peay but still picked up his 15th win of the season
7. Ryan Zimmerman, 3b, U. of Virginia
Future Gold Glover has added power and is expected to move quickly to big leagues
8. Craig Hansen, rhp, St. John's U.
6/6 Update: Opened eyes with dominating performance Friday in just his fourth college start, hitting 97 mph with his fastball and upper 80s with his slider; his slider topped out at 90
9. Jay Bruce, of, West Brook HS, Beaumont, Texas
6/5 Update: Unheralded at the start of the year, his five-tool potential has won over scouts, with the Mets having interest at 9
10. Ricky Romero, lhp, Cal State Fullerton
6/5 Update: Put Fullerton's postseason in jeopardy with regional loss on Saturday; Blue Jays remain locked in on him with the sixth pick
11. Ryan Braun, 3b, U. of Miami
5/24 Update: Always-secretive Brewers said to be eyeing Miami 3b with No. 5 pick if Gordon and Zimmerman are gone
12. Jeff Clement, c, U. of Southern California
6/6 Update: Rumors persist he'll go in the first 10 picks, with the strongest word having him going third overall to the Mariners

13. Andrew McCutchen, of, Fort Meade (Fla.) HS

MOVING DOWN: 6/5 Update: Also on the Mets' short list, McCutchen's lack of size won't keep him out of the first half of the first round
14. Mark Pawelek, lhp, Springville (Utah) HS
5/22 Update: Utah's class 4A playoffs continue to be dominated by top prep lefty, who struck out 13 on Wednesday and hasn't allowed an earned run in his last 60 innings
15. Brian Bogusevic, of-lhp, Tulane U.
MOVING UP: 5/22 Update: Pitched complete game four-hitter, striking out 10 as Tulane clinched Conference USA regular season title
16. Lance Broadway, rhp, Texas Christian
HELIUM ALERT! 6/5 Update: Stock soaring after three straight quality starts against excellent opponents; one of draft’s best curveballs coupled with pitchability and makeup
17. Chris Volstad, rhp, Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.) HS
MOVING DOWN: 6/5 Update: The righthander's stock may have slipped a bit when he struggled in his last start; he hit the first batter and threw just 48 strikes out of the 92 pitches he needed in a four-inning, eight-hits, four-runs outing against Pombroke Pines-Flanagan
18. C.J. Henry, ss, Putnam City HS, Oklahoma City
6/5 Update: Recently worked out for the Yankees in Tampa, who will consider him strongly at No. 17
19. Trevor Crowe, of, U. of Arizona
MOVING UP: 6/6 Update: Every club likes his talent, skills and makeup, it’s just a matter of which club believes he’s the right fit
20. Cesar Carrillo, rhp, U. of Miami
6/5 Update: Ended his two-game losing streak by beating Mississippi State, striking out nine before tiring in the eighth
21. Matt Torra, rhp, U. of Massachusetts
5/22 Update: UMass ended season 16-33, but Torra's final numbers stand out: 6-3, 1.14 with 111 strikeouts in 94.2 innings against just 16 walks
22. Jacoby Ellsbury, of, Oregon State U.
6/5 Update: Scouts and general managers (such as Tampa Bay's Chuck Lamar) converged on Oregon State's regional to see Craig Hansen, Virginia's Ryan Zimmerman and Ellsbury, all of who should go in the first 20 picks
23. Wade Townsend, rhp, Dripping Springs, Texas
MOVING DOWN: 6/5 Update: Worked out for the Mets in St. Lucie; GM Omar Minaya liked Townsend last year when he was running the Expos, but Townsend’s performance didn’t wow anyone
24. Mark McCormick, rhp, Baylor U.
MOVING DOWN: 6/5 Update: Trying to rebound from rough Big 12 tournament, McCormike lasted just 4.2 innings in Sunday's regional game against Texas Christian, allowing two runs, walking four and striking out six
25. Cliff Pennington, ss, Texas A&M
6/5 Update: Pirates and Reds are eyeing him strongly as budget-minded pick at 11-12 spots
26. Joey Devine, rhp, North Carolina State
MOVING UP: 5/24 Update: Was at his best in the ACC Tournament, hitting 96 mph with a filthy slider; ability to move to majors quickly appeals to many clubs
27. Brandon Snyder, c-ss, Westfield HS, Centreville, Va.
Upton and this two-way standout are centerpieces of the richest draft crop in Virginia history
28. Yuneil Escobar, ss, Cuba
MOVING UP: Cuban defector’s stock continues to rise despite some questions on his bat and his advanced age (he’s at least 22)
29. John Drennen, of, Rancho Bernardo HS, San Diego
MOVING DOWN: 6/5 Update: Could go as high as 21 to Oakland, but more likely towards the end of the first round
30. Taylor Teagarden, c, U. of Texas
MOVING DOWN: 6/5 Update: Best defensive catcher in the draft returned to action after missing Big 12 tourney with oblique muscle strain -- homered in both games on Sunday

Michael Bowden, rhp, Waubonsie Valley HS, Aurora, Ill.
Justin Bristow, ss, Mills Godwin HS, Richmond, Va.
