Atlanta Braves 2024 MLB Draft Review

0

Following the 2024 MLB Draft, we’re taking a deeper look at each individual draft class. Below, find one overarching takeaway from the draft, plus a full scouting report on the most interesting pick on days two and three. You can see all 30 draft reviews here.

Draft Theme: Southpaws

The Braves spent nine of their first 10 picks on pitchers, and of that group, four were lefthanded arms. The team managed to get the top prep pitcher in the class, LHP Cam Caminiti, to slide to the 24th overall pick and then stacked college lefthanders Carter Holton, Herick Hernandez and Jacob Kroeger after him. In contrast with many teams, Atlanta opted to target arms in the first 10 rounds and then bats in the final 10, with eight of their last 10 picks being hitters.

Most Interesting Day 2 Pick: RHP Luke Sinnard, 3rd round

Sinnard is a 6-foot-8, 250-pound righthander who set a single-season Indiana record when he struck out 114 batters as a sophomore in 2023. He will miss the 2024 season after undergoing elbow surgery, but should still be a target for MLB clubs given his imposing frame, control and pure stuff. When healthy Sinnard threw a fastball in the 90-94 mph range and touched 96 while mixing in a downer curveball around 80 mph and a short slider/cutter in the upper 80s. Sinnard had also toyed with a low-80s changeup but used the pitch just 3% of the time in 2023.

Most Interesting Day 3 Pick: OF Dalton McIntyre, 19th round

McIntyre started his career as a two-way player with Meridian (Miss.) JC where he got into the low 90s on the mound and hit over .400 in two seasons. The 6-foot-3, 175-pound outfielder then transferred to Southern Miss for the 2024 season and slashed .374/.429/.468 with a pair of home runs, 10 stolen bases, an 11.5% strikeout rate and a 7.9% walk rate. Now a hitter only, McIntyre is near a top-of-the-scale runner with a slappy, opposite field approach who pressures opposing infields by getting out of the box with a jailbreak swing as often as not and consistent sub-4.0 second run times. He won’t threaten to leave the yard too often with light power potential in his thin frame, but he has the tools to be an above-average defensive center fielder with a strong arm.
