2021 MLB Draft and International Slots And Allotments

Major League Baseball informed teams that the 2021 draft would officially be 20 rounds Thursday evening. MLB also provided clarity on the bonus pools and slot values for picks in the top 10 rounds.

Below, you can find each team’s total bonus pool for the 2021 draft, led by the Pirates, who have the first pick in the draft and a $14,394,000 bonus pool to work with. The Tigers come in second with $14,253,800 and the Rangers check in at third with $12,641,000.

The average bonus pool for 2021 is $8,858,980. The Astros have the least amount of bonus pool money to work with this year, in part because of lost first- and second-round picks due to their sign-stealing scandal. Houston’s $2,940,000 is $1,706,100 less than any other team and a full $5,918,380 less than the average bonus pool. The first 23 picks of the first round carry a larger slot allotment than Houston’s entire top-10 round allotment.

Team can spend up to $125,000 on picks in the 11th through 20th rounds without it counting towards their bonus allotment. Any bonus above $125,000 comes out of the team’s bonus allotment. As of last year, nondrafted free agents are limited to $20,000 bonuses.
