Frustration gave way to reinvention last year during spring training for the switch-hitting Walsh, who tried to break a slump with one simple mantra: Swing hard. He always had a good eye for the strike zone, but coaches felt he would poke at pitches, directing them instead of driving them. That changed last year, and the results were eye-catching. Walsh's .413 on-base percentage and his .572 slugging percentage ranked third in the Cardinals system. He was behind only top prospect Oscar Taveras and low Class A Quad Cities teammate Anthony Garcia in slugging. The success earned him a spot in the Arizona Fall League, where he hit .281/.408/.439 in 57 at-bats. It was a breakthrough season that should allow him to break through the glass ceiling at low Class A, where he spent parts of three consecutive seasons. It also gave the Cardinals reason to help him commit to a position. They decided to try second base, where Walsh played at Stanford. He has the athleticism to handle it despite modest speed. He played the outfield corners in the AFL. His improved bat and versatility could make him the next Cardinal who leapfrogs high Class A, lands in Double-A and shoots into the picture as a prospect. That would be quite a swing, too.
