Sarasota High produced three first-round pitchers in a four-year span in the mid-90s but hasn't had another in that class until Miller. He moved up this spring by displaying an excellent breaking ball and an ability to work both sides of the plate. He's still entrenched behind Sean Burnett, Derek Thompson and Joe Torres among Florida lefthanders because of an average (88-91 mph) fastball. He has committed to Louisiana State.

Miller reminds one Twins official of the Cubs' Joey Nation, who may not be a frontline starter but did reach the big leagues three years after he was drafted out of high school. A product of national power Sarasota (Fla.) High, Miller is a finesse lefthander who touches 89-90 mph, hits his spots and has a mature approach to pitching. He enjoys studying and talking about the game. He has an excellent curveball and works both sides of the plate. He wasn't quite as in demand as the three Sarasota hurlers (Matt Drews, Doug Million and Bobby Seay) who went in the first round in a four-year period during the 1990s, but he has a promising future.
