The Phillies took a flier on Allen in the ninth round out of high school in 2010 based on his raw tools, but he has yet to harness his potential in three years at UCLA. He earned just 24 at-bats over his first two seasons, then worked his way into a part-time role as a junior this spring, hitting .250/.347/.364 with two homers and 11 RBIs in 88 at-bats. Strong and physical at 6-foot-1, 225 pounds, his loose hands generate plenty of bat speed, and he flashes plus raw power potential. He dives into the ball, so he is better at driving the ball to the opposite field than turning on balls. Allen needs refinement at the plate and in the outfield, where he is tied to left field thanks to a below-average arm. He's a fringy runner and does not go after balls with conviction in the outfield. His lefthanded power and physical frame make him interesting, but he is a project. He is considered signable and could provide upside in the top 15 rounds.
