View Draft Report
Pruitt led national junior college pitchers with a 0.81 ERA in 2011, when he helped Navarro (Texas) win the Junior College World Series. His success has continued at Houston, where as a senior this spring he became the program's first 10-game winner since No. 4 overall pick Brad Lincoln in 2006. Slightly built at 5-foot-11 and 165 pounds, Pruitt has uncanny command of a spike curveball that he'll throw in any count. His fastball usually operates at 86-87 mph and peaks at 90. He has good feel for a changeup and pounds the strike zone.

Organization Prospect Rankings
Pruitt is a sub-six foot righthander with below-average fastball velocity. As a result, he's had to prove himself at every single level. He proved himself in junior college, then transferred to Houston, where he had an immediate impact on the rotation before developing into an ace as a senior. The Rays took a shot on him, signing him for $5,000 as a low-cost lottery ticket. Since signing, Pruitt has done nothing but prove himself. He's inched his way through the upper minors and earned a 40-man roster spot after a promising season at Triple-A in 2016. Pruitt pitches at 88-90 mph and will touch 92, showing solid-average life on his fastball and the ability to command the pitch. His curveball is an above-average pitch, with 12-to-6 shape, late snap and upper 70s velocity, and his changeup is also effective, showing late tumble. His poor fastball velocity leaves him vulnerable when his command or offspeed offerings aren't at their best, so he needs to be fine to succeed as a starter. Some evaluators believe he could be an effective reliever, with the ability to pitch backwards and enough deception and command to get by. He has a chance to reach the majors in 2017.
